New Features for the N64 in Nintendo Classics

Nintendo has announced three new features for the Nintendo 64 titles in Nintendo Classics Online — but there's a catch: they’ll only be available on the Nintendo Switch 2, starting June 5th. The current Nintendo Switch will remain unchanged, meaning if you want to enjoy these updates, you’ll need to upgrade to the new system.

Here’s what’s coming:

Rewind: Made a mistake during gameplay? Just rewind and try again. This feature brings a major quality-of-life improvement, making old-school games more accessible — especially for new players who may not be used to the challenge of classic titles.

CRT Filter: The beloved CRT (cathode-ray tube) filter is finally coming to N64 games in the Nintendo Classics collection. If you played the N64 back in the 90s, this one’s for you — pure nostalgia. The filter accurately recreates the scanlines and display quirks of old TVs, giving the visuals a retro, authentic feel that’s closer to how the games originally looked.

View & Change Controls: Now you can remap your controller buttons, a much-needed feature if you’re not using the original N64 controller. This is especially helpful in games like Star Fox 64 or GoldenEye 007, where the control layout can feel awkward on a modern Switch controller.

It looks like Nintendo is setting the stage for a strong launch of the Switch 2, starting with these fan-favorite improvements to the Nintendo 64 Classics — all rolling out on June 5th.
